• Services - ACMHS works to influence and raise awareness of cultural issues and mental health to bring about change by policy decision makers and practitioners and also promote good health in the community. ACMHS encourage, facilitate and assist other voluntary and statutory agencies to develop culturally appropriate and sensitive services by our staff delivering training sessions in universities, colleges and statutory services as well as through the distribution of information and advice.

• Achievements - Since its establishment in 1989, ACMHS have developed relevant partnerships and steadfastly provided culturally sensitive and appropriate services to African and African Caribbean people, carers and families who directly or indirectly suffer mental health problems.

• Primary Care Mental Health Team - This service is aimed at African and African Caribbean people experiencing common mental health problems, including those with complex needs, eg: mild to moderate depression or anxiety disorders. However, the service excludes people with psychotic illness such as Schizophrenia and Bi-polar disorders.

African and Caribbean Mental Health Services (ACMHS) are based in Manchester. We are a successful community based organization providing a free confidential and culturally appropriate mental health service to African and African Caribbean people suffering from mental ill health, also for their carers and families. We support over 350 clients per year and operate across economic and socially disadvantaged areas of Manchester, Trafford and surrounding areas. ACMHS takes a holistic approach to mental ill health, perceiving it to be linked not only to psychological genetics, but also external factors such as exclusion and isolation.
